Purpose: To better understand the role of bees in our society and food chain
Objectives:
- To understand pollination
- To understand what “endangered” means
- To appreciate the food we eat and the process that bees participate in to achieve our food
- To potentially plant flowers that attract bees (primarily flowers colored blue, yellow, and white)
Facilitator note: Be mindful that many individuals with and without disabilities have bee phobias—reference this to raise awareness of the fears and strengths related to bees. Additionally, this lesson makes use of the “NewstoU” subscription curriculum platform, which we have found both useful and affordable. 3LPlace is not affiliated with NewstoU.

- Youtube clips
- iPad/s
- News-2-U Story titled: “Rusty Patched Bumblebees”
- Opening coloring page related to pollination
- Energy and affect for a very important concept
- Interactive Whiteboard (optional)
Activity Steps
- Read the News-2-U story (Higher Level first) titled “Rusty Patched Bumblebees” taking turns
- Watch and discuss this clip titled, Pollination lesson with stop motion science animation for kids, to better understand pollination.
- Watch and discuss this clip titled, Saving Bumblebees Became This Photographer’s Mission, to better understand the endangerment of the Rusty Patched Bumblebee.
- Reread the News-2-U (Advanced Level second) and discuss members interests in gardening and growing bumblebee friendly plants as mentioned in both News-2-U stories as well as the aforementioned YouTube videos
