I Have a Dream: Martin Luther King Jr.

Objectives:

  • To deepen the understanding and awareness of the powerful role MLK Jr. played historically for Americans of all backgrounds
  • To increase self-awareness surrounding Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and powerful role in our society
  • To understand the impact of Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his relationship to the geographic location in Boston and local sites and events
  • Thinking more critically about racial backgrounds and skin colors
  • Thinking about personal dreams and creating output around that (written and image based)

Materials needed:

  • iPads/tablets
  • I Have A Dream Worksheet
  • Word Search Worksheet
  • Paper and pens
  • Dry media supplies (ex. Colored pencils, markers, crayons, etc.)
  • Images of Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Maps of the US to discern locations of big events and marches
  • An open mind and heart

 

Activity Steps

  1. Listen to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech followed by discussing many features (ex. Black and white film, the tone of voices, the masses of people, the emotion embedded in the voice of a strong leader with a passion for justice, etc.)
  2. Reflect on the speech and begin to process some of the term used within via worksheets (ex. Word searches, Crossword Puzzles, Connect the image to term or the term to the concept, etc.)
  3. Reflect on member’s own personal dream and put it on paper via typing and or handwriting, followed by (if willing and appropriate) sharing the dream outloud across members and staff.
