Breathing Streamers

Purpose: To explore a sensory activity that lends to breathing exercises.
Objectives: To use tactile and creative methods to better connect to the breath
Materials needed:
- Toilet paper/paper towel rolls
- Tissue paper
- Paint and/or markers
- Elmer’s glue
- Scissors
Activity Steps
- Cut 1/2” - 1” strips of tissue paper (a roll will need about 5 or 6 pieces).
- Put a dot of glue on the inside of the roll’s end about 1” from the edge and put one strip of tissue paper on the glue. Pinch tissue to roll to help stick.
- Repeat step 2 until the rim has one layer of tissue paper strips (optional: can add additional layers if desired)
- Test the streamers by blowing air through the non-tissue paper side and see how the streamers move. Here you can cut the streamers into thinner strips (up until the edge of the roll) if you’d like more fluttering.
- Decorate the outside of the roll with paint or markers, or anything else you would like! Just remember that the roll is going near the mouth, so be sure to use non-toxic materials.
- Once decorated and dried, have people take deep breaths through the tubes and they can watch as their breath makes the streamers dance to life!
Attached below is a picture of what the streamers might look like when finished.
