MBTA Charlie Card

Applies to: Life Skills, Understanding and Participating in Community (New England)
Purpose: Introduce Members to the function and value of a Disabled Charlie TAP card.
Objectives: Members will learn the function of a Disabled Charlie TAP card and understand why it is worth having. They will apply for a Disabled Charlie TAP Card, if they don’t already have one, will learn some fun historical facts about Charlie Cards, and will walk to Davis Square station to check balance or put money on their Charlie Cards using Charlie Fare Machines.
Materials needed:
- Pens, pencils, markers etc.
- iPad, computer or smart board
- Charlie Cards
- Worksheet (see attachment below)
- Application (see link below)
Activity Steps:
- Watch “MBTA slideshow - Charlie on the MTA” for a photo montage to the tune of Charlie and the MTA
- For an introduction to using the Charlie Fare Machine, watch “How to use a CharlieCard“
- Do worksheets and fill out forms at table
- Go to subway station to add fare or check balance on Charlie Cards
- Email Member’s parents that the partially completed Disable TAP application is being sent home and should be filled in by health care provider then returned to 3L so we can bring it to the TAP Office in Downtown Crossing. Link to application: Transportation Access Pass CharlieCard
- Feel free to Google “MBTA Coloring” and print pages for Members to color or to trace the various subway lines in their corresponding colors.
