Make Hummus Not War Lesson Plan

Applies to:  ADEF, Creative Expression, Understanding and Participating in Society

Purpose:  Make a new recipe
Objectives:

  • To expand the palate
  • To learn about food in other cultures/significance of cultural foods
  • Reflection on the food and the culture: positives, negatives, and neutral
  • Executive function: reading steps through on a recipe and translating verbal directions into motor plans

Materials needed:

  • Appropriate visual supports 
    • Video
    • Visual introduction
    • Recipe
  • Ingredients
    • Chickpeas
    • Lemon juice
    • Garlic
    • Tahini (if easily obtainable)
    • Olive oil
    • Veggies/crackers (for dipping)
  • Kitchen tools
    • Blender

Activity Steps:

1. Introduce

  • Using the visual aid created, introduce the idea of hummus to the members.  Be sure to include information on what hummus is, and how it can considered a means for common ground in the Middle East
  • Watch the trailer to “Hummus the Movie”

2. Reflect

  • Ask the member to reflect on common ground, by having them consider one thing that they have in common with their neighbor. Ask them to write or draw this thing in the bowl of hummus (see related visual)

3. Cook and Eat

  • Make the hummus together, using the visual aid recipe
  • Sit down and eat all together
  • Ask the members to rate on a scale of 1-5 (1 bad, 3 neutral, 5 great)

This lesson could also be readapted to learn about food from other cultures, such as Chinese, Polish, German, Vietnamese, etc.
